THE PANEL:


Joe Meyer, Global Microbiology Leader, Kerry

Joe provides microbiology and food safety systems support to Sanitation, Quality, R&D and Kerry manufacturing and co-manufacturing facilities worldwide.  He has over 30 years of food industry experience.  He worked for Kraft Heinz, Miniat Holdings, Covance Laboratories, Kellogg, ConAgra Foods and Kraft Foods/Oscar Mayer prior to joining Kerry.  Much of his career has been spent on the control of foodborne pathogens in the manufacturing plant environment, rapid methods for identification and genetic characterization foodborne pathogens, and continuous improvement of food safety systems such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).  Joe is also a Lead Instructor for the Preventive Controls for Human Foods under the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance.


Jared Nelson, SVP, Crisis & Risk Management, Edelman

Jared serves as Senior Vice President and head of the Central U.S. Region of Edelman's Crisis & Risk Management practice. He oversees the growth of Edelman's crisis practice and practitioners located in Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Austin, Dallas and Houston. Working for a number of Edelman’s largest clients, Jared has helped guide the response to federal lawsuits and investigations, food and consumer product recalls, active shooter events, data breaches, facility/plant accidents, executive transitions, sexual assault and harassment allegations, diversity and inclusion issues, supply chain issues, employee/executive misconduct and other high-impact, reputation-threatening events.

His recent client work has involved crisis preparedness and rapid response counsel for Fortune 500 companies in various industries. He has facilitated more than 100 crisis simulation exercises for C-suites, communications teams and cross-functional incident response teams.  Jared leads Edelman’s Product Safety and Quality Practice and is the deputy lead of the Data Security & Privacy Practice.


Brian Schaneberg, PhD,  Executive Director, Illinois Tech Institute for Food Safety 

Dr. Schaneberg is the Executive Director of the Illinois Tech Institute for Food Safety and Industry Professor of Food Science.  Previously, Dr. Schaneberg was a director within the Global Food Safety, Quality, and Regulatory team at Starbucks Corporation with accountability in leading a team of scientists that interpret food and beverage regulations and consult with researchers and consortiums across multiple categories in areas such as coffee, nutrition, ingredients, claims substantiation, allergens, and risk assessments.  Brian received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Chemistry with a minor in Biology from Central College in Iowa. 


Bernhard Steves, Global Head of Crisis Management, AON

Bernie is the global leader for Aon’s Crisis Management Team based in Denver, Colorado.  He has over 35 years of experience in specialty crisis management insurance and has led Aon’s US Crisis Management team since 2010.  Bernie works with some of the largest companies globally to address their crisis management exposures and is recognized as one of the world’s leading product recall, contamination, and food borne illness insurance specialists.  He is a frequent author and speaker on the topics of product contamination and recall insurance.  His Emerging Trends in Product Recall and Contamination Risk Management Review has been published annually since 2010. 


Brian Sylvester, Partner, Perkins Coie

Brian, a partner at Perkins Coie's Washington, D.C. office, focuses his practice on food and beverage regulatory matters before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and analogous state regulatory bodies. He is a leading authority on food tech regulation and serves as a trusted advisor to global brands, startups, life science companies, investors, and trade associations. Within the realm of food and beverage, his practice spans enforcement actions, audits and investigations, regulatory compliance, labeling and advertising, import and export, due diligence, consumer litigation, comment preparation, public policy advocacy at the federal and state levels, and new product development. Brian is a prolific author and frequent speaker at industry-leading events in the United States, the European Union, Israel, and other parts of the world, and is regularly called upon to offer insights on trending legal issues by leading industry and global publications.
